Traditional South African Recipe

A favorite in many South African homes.  Over the years I’ve seen many versions, but this one is still my favorite.  No need to struggle with making a separate piecrust or rolling out dough.  This is an easy ‘mix-and-bake-recipe’ for a delicious crustless apple pie.  So let’s go !

Delicious Apple Pie Recipe Appeltert uit Suid Afrika

Recipe in English


  • 2 eggs
  • 250 ml of sugar
  • 100 ml evaporated milk (Idealmilk)
  • 25 ml Margarine (melted)
  • 250 ml self-raising flour
  • 2 ml baking powder
  • 1 tin of apples (for baking pies)
  • A pinch of salt


For the Sauce, you’ll need:

  • 100 ml ‘caramel’ condensed milk
  • 250 ml evaporated milk (Idealmilk)


If you love them, add a few raisins.


  • Beat the eggs and sugar together until light and creamy.
  • Add the evaporated milk and the margarine.
  • Stir the dry ingredients into the egg mixture.
  • Spoon batter into a pie plate and arrange the apple pieces on top of the batter.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for 30 minutes until golden brown.


Now for the sauce:

  • When cooked, remove from the oven and prick all over with a fork.
  • Heat the condensed milk and evaporated milk for the sauce and pour it over the hot tart the moment it comes out of the oven.
  • Allow to cool and serve with fresh cream.

Vir die sous:

  • 100 ml karamel kondensmelk
  • 250 ml ingedampte melk (Idealmilk)


  • Klits die eiers en suiker saam tot lig.
  • Voet die ingedampte melk en die margarine by.
  • Roer die droe bestandele by die eiermengsel in.
  • Skep beslag in ‘n tertbord en rangskik die appelstukkies bo-op die beslag.
  • Bak in ‘n voorverhitte oond teen 180 °C vir 30 minute tot goudbruin.

Nou vir die sous:

  • Wanneer gaar haal uit die oond en prik oraloor met ‘n vurk.
  • Verhit die kondensmelk en ingedampte melk vir die sous en giet dit oor die warm tert die oomblik wat dit uit die oond kom.
  • Laat afkoel en bedien met vars room.
