The Kanonkop Trail - One of the Most Popular Hiking Trails

The Kanonkop trail, which is a 4 to 5-hour circular route departing from the Buffelsfontein visitor center within the Cape Point Nature Reserve, is one of the most popular among Cape Point hiking enthusiasts.

Named after the old canon located at its peak, the Kanonkop trail provides impressive views over False Bay, Cape Point, Buffels Bay Beach, and the prominent Da Gama monument, and it also passes an interesting old lime kiln along the way.

Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it is also a nice route with a gentle ascent to the cannons and subsequent descent to the coast. The trail offers magnificent views of the coast and the park.

What to expect from the Kanonkop Trail

The trail starts at the Buffelsfontein visitors center near Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

While you’re at it, the Buffelsfontein visitors center is worth a visit because it’s a source of information about the history of the Cape Point Nature Reserve, and the local flora and fauna. A nearby viewing spot overlooks a stream where wildlife often comes to drink.

There is a short section on a tar road, but otherwise expect to walk mostly on a single sand track.

Although it is a popular trail, there are plenty of opportunities for some solitude if you hike at the quieter times of the day.

Hiking Tips

  • Wear loose, light clothing and sturdy walking shoes.
  • Remember to carry at least two liters of water and some high-energy snacks.
