Looking at the village, you simply cannot miss the gigantic waterfall right there almost in the middle of the town.
The Lauterbrunnen valley boasts with 72 waterfalls of which Staubbach Falls are the highest free-falling (almost 300 meters) waterfall in Europe. Translated in German, Lauterbrunnen means “load fountains”, which is exactly what you will experience when visiting the Trümmelbach Falls in the ‘Black Monk’ mountain. When walking the “Wasserweg Trail” you will see some of the most beautiful waterfalls. The waterfalls make for some of the best hiking trails in Switzerland with breathtakingly beautiful scenery.
Staubbach Falls, with a height of nearly 300 meters, drops into the Lütschine River and is located just above Lauterbrunnen village.
When staying in Lauterbrunnen you are quite near to Interlaken, Grindelwald, Murren as well as Wengen. All of which is definitely counts amongst Switzerland’s most beautiful villages and is definitely all worth a visit and a few night’s stay.
Surrounded in summer by green mountain slopes and colourful meadows with beautiful views, these towns are all fairy-tale pretty.
Don’t be surprised to see Heidi’s goats running in the street on their way to new meadows. Each time I see Lauterbrunnen I feel like Heidi, and I just want to through myself down in the grass and stare at the beloved mountains.
Hotel Oberland’s award-winning restaurant is located in the center of the village and is the best place to eat from breakfast to dinner. They are famous for their Fondue, Röstis and Soups. As they are one of the best restaurants, it is best to book your table in advance.
Watch water from the Trümmelbach Falls gush through crevices past viewing platforms. (These falls can only be reached in summer.)
Paragliding over the Lauterbrunnen valley is the best view you can possible get.
In summer mountain climbing and hiking are popular and in winter there are some awesome ski-trails.
Autumn is the magic time for photographers as the valley changes its spectacular green coat to the beautiful colors of autumn.
The Int. Lauberhorn Races takes place during January each year and the Weihnachtsmarkt in Lauterbrunnen is beautiful in December.
Take the cable car to the Schilthorn Mountain viewpoint, for beautiful views over the Bernese Alps. This viewpoint at 2,960 meters in altitude is famous for its role in the 1969 James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. (..and it is still themed as a 007 tourist attraction, until today.)
Even when walking through the town, the cemetery is a place where you would want to stop and take photos, as it is so beautifully adorned with flowers everywhere.
All available to book through Viator.
My recommendation to this question would be to stay in Lauterbrunnen and not travel in from Interlaken, as the experience is just not the same.
I lost my heart to Wengen, Grindelwald, Murren and Lauterbrunnen. Interlaken is not the same as these villages, but is still awesomely beautiful with its own precious places to visit. But if you’re after a Swiss Alps experience, stay in the mentioned towns, as above.
