Markthal in Rotterdam

Should you be visiting Rotterdam, you might be advised to go see ‘the Markthal’, and then think “but why?”  This is why:

The ‘Markthal’ or The Market Hall in Rotterdam is a popular stop for travelers from around the world.  When entering this magnificent building you understand why everyone advises you to go there.  It is a jaw-dropping moment.

What makes it different to other market halls around the world is the fact that it houses:

  • A well-known Fresh Market together with catering establishments
  • Residential Space (228 apartments)
  • Food shops
  • A Supermarket and regular retail shops
  • As well as a huge parking lot

… all under one roof.

Just outside the Markthal, there is an outdoor market on Saturdays and Tuesdays, with more than 460 stalls.  This makes it one of the largest markets in the Netherlands.

Markthal in Rotterdam Netherlands

This horseshoe / tunnel-shaped 40 m high hall was designed by the MVRDV architectural firm and is definitely worth a visit.  The architecture alone catches your eye and keeps your attention.  Then you have all the rest to add as well as a fantastic atmosphere.

Historical Value

The Markthal was built on the same spot as where the very first Rotterdam settlements once were built.  This gives it a special historical angle as well.  On display in the stairwell of the parking garage, are the remains of a historic farm that were found during excavation.  This is all part of the tour information and many more interesting facts you will get while doing the actual tour.

Artwork

The artwork covers the entire interior façade of The ‘Markthal’ or The Market Hall (11,000 m² (two football fields) consisting of 4,000 panels of 1.5 by 1.5 meters). The artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam’s contemporary variation of the still lives of old masters’ Dutch paintings are very impressive.

Is it worth a visit

In my opinion the building is very impressive, particularly for the artwork. I think it is well worth a visit, but it can get a bit crowded at times.  There is a lively atmosphere and you have lots of options in food stalls and shopping.  But it might be a good idea to book a tour or go early morning.
