Orșova is a city on the beautiful Danube River in the southwest of Romania’s Mehedinți County. Located in the Banat historical region, it is situated where the beautiful Cerna River meets the famous Danube River.
The Danube in Romania is simply beautiful. Far more beautiful than anywhere in any big city. We definitely recommend that you take a picturesque boat trip on the Danube in this area. Here you’ll see Romania and Serbia next to each other as a viewpoint from the boat. The Danube forms a natural border between the two countries. In my opinion, it is quite fascinating when you’re there, to see. It is beautiful.
Veterani Cave Orşova – The Pestera Veterani Cave is among the first caves in the world, with a map and forms a big part of Romania’s history.
The Trajan’s Bridge – Trajan’s Bridge or Bridge of Apollodorus was a Roman segmental arch bridge. It was the first bridge to be built over the lower Danube and one of the biggest achievements in the Roman architectures’ history.
Trajan’s Plaque – This relic honors the construction of a Roman military road in the 2nd century.
Rock Sculpture of Decebalus (above) – The massive rock sculpture of Decebalus is a carving of the face of Decebalus. He was the last king of Dacia, who fought against the Roman emperors Domitian and Trajan to preserve the independence of his country.
The Iron Gate – Photo above, (Romanian Porƫile de Fier, Serbo-Croatian Gvozdena Vrata) is the last gorge of the Ðerdap gorge system on the Danube River. It divides the Carpathian and Balkan mountains. Therefore forming part of the boundary between Serbia and Romania.
Mânăstirea Sfânta Ana Orşova or St Anne Monastery (Manastirea S Fanta Ana) is a definite Must-See destination in Orşova. They have the most beautiful garden. Summertime is definitely a fantastic time to visit them. For more information, follow them on their Facebook page.
The area around the Danube is beautiful for hiking and if you hike to the top of the cliffs, you will be rewarded with spectacular views.
A trip to the Nera Gorges National Park (Nerei – Beușnița Ravine National Park (Parcul Naţional Cheile Nerei – Beușnița) is definitely also worth it.
