The news that “South Africa wins big at the 2021 World Travel Awards” for the African continent came at a suitable time. After an extended period of lockdowns and chilly winter, South Africans have reason to celebrate with numerous awards. Some of which they’ve scooped up year after year!
Cape Town took the honors for the fifth year running.
They had stiff competition from:
Durban might not have won the leading city destination award, but it walked away as the place to be for festivals and events. Furthermore, it is their second year running that they scooped the award away from Cape Town (2018 – 2020). Not shabby! Even more impressive is that they competed against the likes of Marrakech and Rabat, both in Morocco.
Having lost the award to Nairobi in Kenya in 2016, Durban again came out tops for the 5th consecutive year.
Cape Town International Airport walked away with the award for the 5th year running.
Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa won the award every year since 2002! This year they were up against:
Babylonstoren Hotel unseated MannaBay in South Africa. Manna Bay took the award home for the previous four consecutive years.
After five years, Sun City again walked off with the award. From 2009 to 2015, Sun City Resort was the front-runner in providing families with amazing holidays. Then in 2016, Leopard Beach Resort & Spa in Kenya walked off as the new front-runner. Until in 2020 when Baobab Beach Resort & Spa, also in Kenya, took the honors. But no more. Sun City is again firmly in place to provide families with all the bells and whistles that goes into a fabulous family holiday.
Radisson Hotel & Convention Centre Johannesburg at O.R. Tambo walked away with two awards. Besides being the leading conference hotel, they were also recognized as the leading new hotel in Africa.
